Here at The Doctor’s House, we want our TDH family to know about the importance of having optimal vitamin D levels this winter and beyond. Vitamin D deficiency is a worldwide problem in all age groups, and it can have serious consequences for our health.

Fortunately, we can protect ourselves and our loved ones. Vitamin D deficiency is easy to correct, and we’re here to help.

Vitamin D is a prohormone that our bodies produce when our skin is exposed to sunlight. It binds to different receptors in our bodies and plays a crucial role in overall health.

Here are just some of the surprising ways vitamin D does our bodies good.

Protecting against severe COVID-19

We’re devoted to helping the Edina, Minnesota, community stay safe during the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. That’s why we want our TDH family to know the benefits of vitamin D for boosting the immune system.

Vitamin D plays a crucial role in helping our bodies fight off infections and may reduce the risk of becoming severely ill with COVID-19.

For most of us, vitamin D levels are at their lowest during the wintertime, which also when COVID-19 activity ramps up. Those of us with low vitamin D levels are especially vulnerable to getting sick. Let’s get those vitamin D levels up together!

The immune system benefits of vitamin D don’t stop with fighting COVID-19. Vitamin D also slows and reduces cancer development. Not getting enough vitamin D increases the risk of several types of cancers, including breast, colon, prostate, and skin cancer.

From weight loss to a better mood

For many of us, being thrown into a global pandemic has meant adapting our ways of life. From limiting social engagements and sheltering in place to adapting to working or studying from home, daily life is definitely different.

Less exercise and increased isolation can cause the scale to creep up and our mood to slump. Fortunately, they don’t call vitamin D the happy vitamin for nothing.

The sunshine vitamin not only helps our brains make feel-good chemicals, it aids weight loss by reducing fat storage and improving our bodies’ ability to manage blood sugar.

Other surprising vitamin D benefits

We all know that vitamin D is important for strong bones, but for those of us with joint pain, it’s good to know that vitamin D may ease achy joints. That’s because vitamin D has anti-inflammatory effects that calm inflammation and soothe joint pain.

Vitamin D also helps our bodies manage blood sugar, which may protect against Type 2 diabetes. Vitamin D can even combat fatigue. It has even been found to help reduce risk of cancer especially breast, colon, and prostate cancers.

Vitamin D checkup and supplementation

We can check your vitamin D levels with a simple blood test that tells us where you are. The test measures the level of 25-hydroxyvitamin D in the bloodstream, which is the most accurate way to tell how much vitamin D is in our bodies.

Most of us could use more vitamin D. Stop in to see us if you haven’t had your vitamin D levels checked this year. If you’re low, we can discuss supplementation to get your levels back on track. Call us or book online to meet us and learn how we can help.

I am amazed at how much time the Doctor spends with me. She is very compassionate, is very interested in your issues and solving them. I was totally taken away when some test results showed some possible heart issues. She immediately rescheduled more test and made the appointments as we sat in the clinic room. When I first met my new heart doctor, he said I very lucky to have Dr. O as my doctor because she cared so much about her patients. (you might have to wait a bit to get called to your room, be patient, she will spend as much time with you)

Dr O is amazing- she really listens and considers a patient's entire well being. She's pragmatic and I am already feeling much better after a few visits (and some vitamins that are missing from my system). She takes all the time needed to answer every question and is always responsive and engaging.

Dr. Okulaja has been my primary care physician since 2009. That, right there, says a lot. From my personal experience, her medical treatment is very proactive, to keep me healthy, instead of just reactive. She spends enough time with me at appointments & listens well & works “with” me for my best healthcare plan. Her most unique quality in today’s healthcare world, is that she truly does care deeply about her patients, & I feel very fortunate to be one of them. I highly recommend her as a Dr.
